The Queen Returns

We’ve been waiting 5 years for her to come out of hiding. And now? She’s back. And she’s better than ever before. Armed and ready to regain her throne, and while trample down anyone who gets in her way.

That’s right.

Andrea Elber has returned.

We wanted to find out what sent this woman into hiding for so long. She agreed to clear up the mist of uncertainty. Here. Right now, we discovered the truth.

So Andrea, how are you feeling today? Where have you been these past five years?"
"I'm feeling good, a little exhausted and tired. And I have actually been raising a child, me and my husband had been raising an orphan. Because I couldn't have children. Life was so hectic and fast, I just felt I couldn't exactly cope in the music business and raise a child too. So, I dropped out, I didn't want to explain why, I just left, I didn't want my daughter to be bombarded with negative media, so me and her and my husband hid away and began peaceful lives."

Do you think you're ready to be back here [The music business] so soon?
"Yes, as a matter of fact I think I'm ready. I'm more ready than I have ever been before, my daughter Meda, has given me so much motivation, she pushed me back to this point. I was adamant, I would not compose again. But she insisted, she said I must, I must fulfil my dreams."

She seems to of impacted you a lot, do you think because of her your music style might have changed?
"No, I don't think so. I want to keep composing what I know well, I think it's too late to change, I feel like, if I made my compositions more modern, I would lose my audiences. I have lost quite a lot discarding the music business, I would dread to lose my fans. I have had so many letters and messages of them begging me to come back, I didn't realise how much they needed me. I didn't know I was an actual inspiration."

What are you going to do now?
"Now? I'm not actually sure. I want to do so much but their just doesn't seem like there is any time during the day anymore. I want tour again. I think that's what I miss the most. I miss the hype, I miss the god awful silence you heard while you performed. And the adrenaline rush you feel when it's over and you're praised. I miss the fans a lot to, the ones who nervously came to you in the street. Shaking a sheet of your music and asking you to sign."

Will we see any future albums or collaborations?
"Maybe. But right now, I want to keep my work a secret. I want to leave my audience with an element of surprise. But, I'll tell you a little hint.. There will be definitely be a new album on the way. We, me and Schirmer Records, have got 21 tracks recorded, and we are currently perfecting them and designing the album covers."

Where do you think you will be in the next 5 years?
"That's a tough question to be honest. I think I'm going to twist it and answer 'Where do I want to be in 5 years?' And my answer to that is, I want to be in a band, I no longer want to be a solo composer,I want to join an orchestra or maybe form a classical band. Being a solo composer is such a lonely road, and I feel, it would be a lot more fun if I had made friends to share my passion with music with."

Here are my drawn out front cover, contents page and dps. 

TA ANALYSIS RESEARCH

To make an effective music magazine, I composed a survey to find out what my target audience are looking for. The results of this survey will allow me to make a very effective music magazine, with the decisions that will be made, all enhanced by this survey.

I linked my survey to 10 different people and gathered results, after gathering these results, I formed bar-charts showing the results clearly.

For my first question I asked, whether or not the size of the masthead mattered, I needed this information because I wanted to know if the masthead mattered, so, I could determine whether or not I should make it large and bold like Kerrang, or small and simple like Q.










The results I gathered from question one, were that 80% of people felt like the size of the masthead, did in fact matter. I was planning on using a large masthead, but from gathering the results I can now determine, that, it would be a good idea.

For my second question I asked, whether or not if the masthead is bigger, will it catch their eye more. I want to use a large masthead so, I thought this question was appropriate, because it will help me determine whether it's actually going to get sold.

The results I gathered from question two, is that 100% of the people I asked, felt that the larger masthead would in fact their eye. From this it's shown me that it's a good idea to put a large masthead.

The third question I asked was whether or not you would expect to see bright colours on a contents page or bland ones. This question was in the wrong place but it was too late to change it. But, from this I wanted to gather what colour scheme they felt was appropriate, 











Out of the 10 responses on the survey, I gathered that people would prefer to see bright colours on a contents page. I made a mistake with this question, by not specifically stating what music magazine it was, I feel, the responses would be different if I stated that. But, I think I still might use blander colours than bright.


The fourth question I asked was whether or not an attractive model was important. I asked this question because I wanted to test Laura Mulvey's theory about how women were meant for the male gaze.











From this question, I gathered that her theory was right. The vast majority of the voters were male, and an attractive model is really important. 

The next question I asked was whether, on a classical magazine should the model look, excited and fun or serious and powerful. This question will help me plan how my target audience think my model should look.

From my results, I gathered that 70% think my model should look serious and powerful, this is what I actually wanted to do with my model, because I felt that mainly classical artists look powerful.

The sixth question I asked, would help me with my DPS, this is because I wasn't sure what the audience would like to read in a classical magazine.

From my results I gathered that, 50% thought that it should be fun and informative, this is helpful because it gives me an insight to what people would be interested to read.

The seventh question I asked was what colour scheme people would prefer, I needed to know this because I wasn't sure whether to use soft colours, or bold ones.












After gathering my results, I found out that 60% of my target audience prefered the bold colours, whereas only 40% prefered the softer ones, I am glad this is my outcome because I would've liked to use bold colours anyway.


The eighth question I asked was how much you would pay for a classical magazine. I wasn't sure how willing my target audience would be, and if it was to expensive; would it sell? 












From gathering my results, I found out that 50% were willing to pay up to £4. This is good because it gives me quite a big gap to work with. I decided my final price would be £3.50

The ninth question I asked was whether or not they would pay more for good quality paper.
I wanted to know this because if I didn't print it on good paper, would it make any money?

From the results I gathered that, the quality of the paper mattered on how much you would pay. I will be using paper like in Q magazines which is higher quality, unlike Kerrang.

For my tenth question, I asked where my target audience get music from, this is because I know my target audience is for young people, and I felt having link, or free downloads on certain most used apps/sites, would be effective.

From my results, I think that some spotify links and some youtube link will be effective and, maybe a free download.

PLANNING POST - PHOTOGRAPHY PLAN - CONTENTS PAGE

On my contents page, I think there should be a range of images, some of which are....

One of the images on my contents page, it will be of a violin, this is because inside there is a page called "5 easy steps to violin you must know". This would be effective because I feel many classical magazine readers, are in an orchestra. I chose a violin because it related to my masthead.

Another image I wanted was, one of three people with their backs facing us, this is because one of the stories is about a band 10 years on, and I think they should be wearing more modern and loose clothing. 

Another image I was thinking of, would be an image of the main star, but in different poses. I think this would be effective because she will be the main story, and her being on the contents will indicate where the main story is.

INITAL IDEAS - PHOTOGRAPHY PLAN - FRONT COVER

On my front cover, I think my star image should be wearing a dress, either over the shoulder or a fitted dress, both of which should be black. These are two of the examples I found. In my opinion, I think the over the shoulder dress would break conventions of a music magazine, plus it would be more appealing to a younger audience, I would choose that one. 





In this shot, I would like it to be a location shot, I think this would look nice in front of olden buildings and grassy areas. I think this would be effective because I will make the model look bold and powerful.

INITIAL IDEAS - PHOTOGRAPHY PLAN

In photo shoots I would preferably like to have studio lighting, this is because it will enable me to control the shows and the intensity of lighting shining on the model's face. I would prefer to do this because,I feel it would look better than natural light and I will be able to highlight key features of the model's face with the lighting.

I would like my model to be female and her looking around the ages of 20-30, this is because I want my target audience to be university students and you don't really see many young (14-19) people on it. 

Preferably, I would like my model to have natural make-up and her to look very firm in her face, very sure of herself. I think she should be wearing an over the shoulder dress, of which I don't think should be revealing. This is because it defies Laura Mulvey's theory of that women are for the male gaze, that they have to wear skimpy clothes and reveal parts of their body.

You were the best female classical artist the world has seen in a long time? Where did you go?

“Well, you see. About 5 years ago, I finally realised, from how poisonous the fame was, and what it was this was doing to my family. My marriage broke down. Now that, that really swept me off my feet and made me have a different perspective of how damaging fame is to you. And around this time, my son, my wonderful boy, was announced terminal. He was only 7. That shook my world more than my marriage. It was awful. I couldn’t let fame and the pain merge. I had to get away.”

That’s understandable. Do you want to talk about your son a little more? Was he a happy boy?

“Oh, of course. I love talking about my precious boy Richard, unfortunately, he is no longer with us. He was such a sweet boy. So, joyful, he had a lot of friends. He’d always pester me to bring them around and one day. God, I remember it as if it was yesterday. One day, he just stopped being himself. As his mother, it was ridiculously heart-breaking to watch their child’s personality slip away from him, now, we weren’t aware of his illness. We had taken him to countless doctors’ appointments, me and my husband put my son through hell, he done countless blood-tests but no-one could find the cause. That was the toughest part. Not knowing. The Unknowingness.”

That really does sound awful. How did you cope?

“Well, at first, me and my husband both denied ourselves this was happening, that it was a phase that there was nothing wrong with our boy. He was just down in the dumps. But, I kept getting calls, almost every-day, from the school saying he has a sharp pain across his side, we kept taking him to the doctors, we were awfully scared.”

When did you find out the worst?

“Well, as a matter of fact, it was one night. My husband broke down, he was so conflicted about the situation. He couldn’t deal with the thought of losing our son, to what? An unknown cause. So, he picked him up and rushed him to a hospital in Cambridge, about 75 miles from where we were living at the time. We arrived. My husband waited outside while I sat and held his hand. We waited hours for an outcome, and when the doctor finally came… I could tell it was something serious. My face when white when the words “I’m so sorry. But, your son has cancer... He’s terminal, and doesn’t have much longer to live… there’s nothing we can do.” Quaked through my system. I broke down, it must’ve been so loud, my husband came rushing in from four rooms down”

How did you cope?
“Well. How can someone cope? My son was terminal. It was like I was in a never-ending horror show. I fell into depression… It was awful. I felt sorry for myself, whilst my son was happy and was spending his little time left with absolutely anyone. I don’t know what I had done wrong to get this to happen to me. I just felt like the whole word was against me, I shut off. I missed meetings with my agent, I missed concerts. I decided to go off the map. I didn’t want to be found, I didn’t want to be acknowledged. All I think was “why me?” and “why not anyone else?” and yes I know that is awfully selfish and no one deserves this but I’m pretty sure ANY parent would feel the same. But, I am so glad I am back. It feels good.”













In the end I decided not to use this because it was not related to music enough.

PLANNING POST - MAKE UP AND HAIR IDEAS

I think my model should not wear any make-up at all, this is because I feel it will look more natural and sophisticated, if she does not wear any. I want my model to have shoulder length fair hair, preferably tied back, this is because the hair might hide key features of the model that I would like to highlight.

PLANNING POST - CLOTHING IDEAS

I chose these clothes because, I'm doing a classical genre and these dresses are old-fashioned looking. They are all similar style and very classy and sophisticated. The shoes are nice and appropriate, they look very basic, yet they also look very pretty. 

I think this would be a good style for my model because it looks neat and classy. It would make her look sophisticated and in style.

The dress I finally chose was a black over the shoulder one, like very similar to this dress. I chose this because I felt it had a lot of class and sophistication in it and elegance too. I chose not to wear shoes because my shot was a medium-close up and I decided jewellery might be too 'flashy' and distract away from the model.

PLANNING LOCATIONS - REFLECTION ON RESEARCH

I decided not to use those locations because it was near impossible to get my model to the locations I needed. So, instead I decided to take some photos in Brigg for my Contents page and some studio shots for my Front Cover and DPS.

SLIDELY - TA RESEARCH

I created this video to show I have researched visually what my target audience could be interested in, their hobbies and their beliefs. I think this research will help me find out what my audience enjoys, and what they are interested in. This will help me attract the certain members of the public, by putting some features the majority are interested in, on the front cover. 

By looking at Blumer and Katz, I used their theory to gain insight on my target audience and what would attract them to buy my magazine. I think the target audience of my magazine would be youths, who are in a school band, or who have a specific interest in classical music. 

PLANNING POST - STAR MAGE

My star image would be someone young, preferably someone who looks between the ages of 25-30, and in the article it would highlight how he/she has returned to the classical music business and their journey to this point.

If I used a male, I would have him in a white shirt, red tie and fitted black trousers, with his blazer slung over his shoulder. He would be built, very much so, looking powerful, which is how Dyer would describe a famous person. "An image, not a real person." 

If I used a female, I would have her in a short dress, over the shoulder, this is not a convention of Classical music magazines, usually their female models are quite covered up, and not revealing much.
She would also look powerful, almost towering over the camera, this is reffering to Laura Mulveys theory. She will look confident and prepared to be back in the business. 

The story I am thinking of writing would be exciting and interesting, it will give the reader an insight of whats been going on in the artists life of the past 5-10 years, I will present this as a Q&A and not too text heavy, to keep the reader involved and enjoying it.

MY GENRE - MAGAZINE LOCATION RESEARCH

This photograph was taken in an open, pane glassed window area, it has golden pillars and a white floor. In my opinion, this was a very good location to take a photograph for a classical music magazine, as the pastel colours set a very calm atmosphere. The red dress contrasts with the rest of the photograph because it stands out and is very bright, this draws attention to the star. The fact she is not looking at the camera shows she is mature and is very sophisticated.

This photograph was taken in front of a brick wall, and the grey bench clashes with it. It is clearly taken outdoors, with studio lighting because the stars face is very highlighted. The star is not facing the photographer, this makes him look like he has a higher status and has a sophisticated edge to it. Overall, the clashes of all the colours is brilliant and creates an eye-catching front cover.

This photograph was taken indoors, in what looks to be a fancy bar, or restaurant. The paleness of the stars clothes makes him stand out and the readers attention is brought to him. It looks like it mainly uses natural sunlight, as you can see the seat is highlighted and he has shadows on his face. The reflection on the table is a good effect to have. The star is not looking at the camera, whilst his clothes may seem casual he looks away to give off a mysterious and sophisticated edge to him.






This photograph looks like it was taken outdoors, with winter scenery behind the star. The background scenery is blurred which draws the readers attention to the star, enabling more focus to be put on him. The stars clothing makes him look very dark compared to his very pale face. I think this is suitable for the genre because it has a very bland colour scheme. The natural light sharpens the models face and makes him look joyful.




This photograph was take in front a tree in autumn, this sets a peaceful atmosphere and creates a quite soothing vibe, which is a convention of classical music. The blurred background is effective because it draws attention to the star and makes her seem more bold. The dark green dress she wears contrasts with the tree and the nature look. I like how she is holding a viola because that is a convention of classical music magazines. This shot was taken in natural lighting because it sharpens her face and some parts are shadowed. The star does not look at the photographer which creates a higher class and more sophisticated edge.

This photograph was taken indoors in front of a old window pane, it is quite dark but very bright on the stars face. The dim lighting makes the star stand out even more because the light is focused on her.  The red on the models dress contrasts with the rest of the photograph because it makes her, and the viola stand out.

TA1 MASTHEAD RESEARCH

I think this would be a good font for my genre because it's looks very fancy and modern. It will help bring a younger audience.

I like this font because it looks a lot like calligraphy giving it a very sophisticated edge and making it appeal to a lot of people.

This is probably my favourite out of all the fonts because it is bold, it looks very modern yet classy too. But, I am unsure whether or not I would choose it.

I don't like this font because it is very unclear and it would break conventions, it looks very rushed and messy.






I really like this font because it looks extremely sophisticated and classy. I do not think it would appeal to a younger audience, because it looks quite mature.

These are the results I gathered from my poll - which I created on polldaddy.

The title of my magazine is going to be called "Violoncelle" which is French for Cello. I think this was a good choice because a Cello is a well known classical instrument.

In the end, I chose number 3 because its the one I prefer. And it suits the classical look in my opinion.

I have checked out my masthead name and nobody has used it before.
